Crestview First Graders Check Out Real-World Learning at United Supermarkets

In first grade, students begin exploring the basics of financial literacy through lessons in decision-making and budgeting. To bring these concepts to life, Crestview Elementary teachers connected the lesson to the real-world experience of grocery shopping.

For the past 25 years, Crestview first graders have taken a field trip to their neighborhood United Supermarkets to put their classroom lessons into practice. First grade teacher Saundra Wimberley explained that the annual visit gives students a hands-on opportunity to experience what it’s like to plan, shop, and make purchasing decisions.

Before the trip, classes learned about the different sections of a grocery store, practiced making shopping lists, and discussed how to plan for and purchase their own groceries.

Once they arrived, the customers in training were guided through the entire store, making stops at some unexpected places along the way, including the bank, pharmacy, floral department, and the big box crusher. They explored the frozen foods, dairy, fish market, produce sections, and even got to step inside the giant freezer and refrigerator. In the bakery, each class had a cake decorated just for them, and the deli sent the students home with special treats to enjoy.

After the tour, students broke into small groups accompanied by parent volunteers and shopped for the items on their lists. At checkout, Essence, a United Customer Service employee, helped students complete their purchases, make change, and keep their receipts.

Wimberley explained that the first graders are always excited for this trip.

“They talk endlessly about how cold the refrigerator and freezer were and squeal when they see the raw fish,” Wimberley said. “However, their favorite activity is having control over shopping with their own list and money, and then checking themselves out. They’re so proud!”

The visit provided students with a meaningful, hands-on lesson in independence, financial literacy, and real-world skills that will stay with them long after the trip. Wimberley also shared her appreciation for the community partnership that makes this experience possible.

“This has been an anticipated yearly trip for 25 years,” she said. “Thank you to United personnel for their warm welcome, valuable learning experience, and for loving the students of Crestview!”

Great work, Crestview students!
